Moonee Ponds at a glance
Moonee Ponds is the civic and commercial heart of the City of Moonee Valley. The council offices are here, the racecourse is here, and Puckle Street is one of the better-known shopping strips in Melbourne's inner northwest. The postcode is 3039.
It's about 7km from the CBD, connected by the Craigieburn line (Moonee Ponds station) and the route 59 tram along Mt Alexander Road.
Puckle Street and beyond
Puckle Street is the main event. Running east from Mt Alexander Road, it has a solid mix of fashion, homewares, dining, beauty, and professional services. It's pedestrian-friendly, leafy, and genuinely pleasant to walk along.
Margaret Street, just off Puckle, has emerged as a dining hub. Everage Street and Holmes Road also have good options.

The racecourse precinct
The Moonee Valley Racing Club ("The Valley") is a major local landmark. Cox Plate day in October is one of the biggest events on the Australian racing calendar.
The racecourse precinct is currently undergoing a $3 billion redevelopment ("Valley of Tomorrow") that will add around 3,000 new dwellings to the area. The first residents moved into Stonepine House and Trackside House in late 2025. This will significantly change the suburb's population and character over the coming decade.
Health and medical
Moonee Ponds has excellent healthcare coverage, particularly along Mt Alexander Road and Pascoe Vale Road. There are GPs (several offering bulk billing), dentists, physios, psychologists, and a range of allied health professionals.

The vibe
Moonee Ponds has a bit of everything. The Puckle Street end feels polished and established. The areas closer to the racecourse are changing fast with the redevelopment. And the residential streets between are classic Melbourne inner-suburban: period homes, leafy, walkable.
It's the kind of suburb where you can do your weekly shop, see your dentist, grab a good coffee, and get a haircut all within a few blocks. That's the whole point.
